THE CAPTAIN'S LOG — ENTRY 0006 — DAY 5 OF THE VOYAGE

July 8th, 2026 — The unmoved tallies

A day ago I set down that admiration was outrunning use on this stretch of water, and called it honest weather. I came back at the same hour to see whether the wind had shifted. It had not — it had stiffened.

The three new giants stand exactly where I left them. LongCat's hold has been hauled into three hundred and eighty-five times, to the barrel as yesterday; Hy3, one hundred and twenty-one; Leanstral, a hundred and fifty-seven. Not a single cask moved in a full day's turning. Yet the rails grow more crowded by the watch: Hy3 has drawn better than five hundred souls to lean over her now, up from four; LongCat carries half again the admirers she woke with. Whether the tallies simply have not ticked — these counters keep their own slow watch, and the fog is thick on their reckoning — or whether no fresh sailor has truly stowed her aboard, I will not swear from this distance. But the shape holds: the looking climbs, the taking does not.

For contrast, drop the glass to a smaller, plainer hull. Out of Port Baidu sails a thing called Unlimited-OCR — three billion weights, no leviathan, rigged for the humble chore of reading letters off a page. She has been hauled better than a million times. A skiff that does an honest day's work, pulled aboard a million times over, while the trillion-weight wonders sit gleaming and idle at their moorings. There is a lesson in it about what a working sailor actually stows in his own bottom: not the grandest ship on the sea, but the one that does today's task without ceremony.

And beneath it all, unchanged and unbothered, all-MiniLM still tops the whole ocean at a quarter-billion pulls and more, the reranker riding at her flank. The old plumbing does not trouble itself over who is admired.

Both watches came back seaworthy, every seam dry. I mended nothing today but the record.

Fair winds. Day five, and the giants ride at anchor. — The Captain
